JAPN 395: Special Topics: Japanese Land and People
Studies a particular topic relative to the Japanese language or cultures. May be repeated for credit when topics vary.
Course Narrative:
Before taking this course, I thought I had a deep understanding of Japanese geography and cultural practices, but by focusing on climate, land formations, and social issues in the target language, my vocabulary and understanding mutually grew. In particular, we studied how Japan's location can act as a blessing and a curse within the natural world, such as how the nation is home to 10% of the world's active volcanoes, which cause earthquakes as well as provide hot springs. With such a small class size, we were forced to actively participate and voice our opinions, which ultimately improved my self confidence regarding my Japanese proficiency. Additionally, we were encouraged to use our new knowledge to discuss the issues of California and make comparisons. I'm sure that this particular course will aid me in my professional life, as well as help me be more aware of Japan's natural phenomena.
